Ajanta have 30 caves in total, which were excavated and complete from 2nd Century BC to 6 Century AD, in short it took around 800 years. These were made with the intention to spread buddhism and to give temporarily shelter for Buddhist Monks especially during monsoon. These caves have twenty five viharas(monasteries) and five chaityas(prayer halls). The caves were cut out from the huge mountain ranges. The caves were made with the help of pickaxe, various types of chisel and hammer. The mountain is cutted steep and then each caves are cutted from top to bottom i.e. first the ceiling is made later the floor is touched. For painting the walls various types of local metals, vegetable fibre were used.
These caves are recognized under UNESCO. There are two viewpoints first is short walk beyond the river crossed via a bridge below Cave 8 and second one is further uphill walk lead you to the spot where Britishers found the caves. Best time to visit caves is morning time because you will find little crowd. There is no much of hotel for stay nearby, the best option is to stay in Jalgaon or Aurangabad.
The visitors with limited time must at least visit Caves 1, 2, 9, 10, 16, 17, 19 and 26.
